Advanced Rummy Tips

Rummy is a game of both skill and memorization. It’s deceptively simple to play, but very difficult to master. However, for our more advanced users or those who simply want to take their rummy game to the next level, here are some great tips that will help you to win at virtually all the different versions of Rummy that we offer here at Rummy-Gin.Org:

Pay Close Attention to the Discard Pile

You probably know already that you shouldn’t take cards from the discard pile unless you absolutely have to. That’s because taking such cards tips your hand to your opponent about which cards you need in order to build your melds.

However, the reverse is also true – if you have a good memory, you can keep track of which cards were left on the discard pile and which ones your opponent picked up. This can provide you with a tactical advantage since you are able to block your opponent from getting the cards he or she may need in order to complete his or her melds.

It does take a lot of work though as you need to note more than just the cards that they pick up but also the cards that they leave behind. For example, if they picked up the 4 of hearts but left the 3 of hearts sitting on the discard pile earlier in the game, there is a chance that they aren’t going for a run but are instead going for a set. If they also left behind the 5 of hearts, then you know for certain that they need 4s and you can deny them those cards if you happen to draw them (that is, until you yourself are ready to lay down your cards with your own melds).

Keep Deadwood in Mind

For Rummy games that involve deadwood (i.e. gin Rummy, Canasta, etc.), it’s important to remember that deadwood will count against you when you are done. Therefore, it’s a good idea to try to discard high number cards rather than low number cards wherever possible when playing rummy, especially if you want to win!

Middle Cards More Valuable

Another great tip to remember is that middle cards tend to be more strategically valuable in rummy. For example, the 7 card can be used with a variety of runs while the ace is more limited because of the fact that it comes at the end of the deck.

Psychology

Finally, for the truly advanced rummy player, a great tactic is to use psychology against your opponent. You can do this by occasionally picking up random cards from the discard pile which you don’t happen to need so as to confuse your opponent into thinking that you do need them to create melds. Ideally, you should pick up low value cards from the discard pile if you’re going to do this when playing any rummy game that involves deadwood so as to minimize your chances of losing due to the number of points you lose from deadwood.
