To that end, we include popular rummy variations including gin rummy and of course Oklahoma Gin. Sometimes known as Oklahoma Gin Rummy or Oklahoma Rummy, Oklahoma Gin is a variation on a variation of traditional rummy. Here’s how it works:
Very Similar to Gin
You may be aware that standard Gin, which is itself a variation on the game of rummy, involves the use of 10 cards instead of 7 cards that standard rummy uses. The extra three cards can either be added to the sets or runs (i.e. a set includes three of a kind or four of a kind while a run includes consecutive numbers within the same suit of cards) or they can be considered to be deadwood.
Deadwood is basically a set of cards which are left over once seven of the cards in gin rummy are used up. The total value of the cards cannot equal more than 10 points; otherwise you need to get rid of some of the cards in order to win the game.
Oklahoma Gin Variation
The big difference in Oklahoma Gin is that the deadwood could be further limited. The way it works is that the two players are given 10 cards each and then the remainder of the deck is placed face down on the table, in exactly the same way as standard gin is played. The first card on the remainder of the deck is then turned over and placed face up next to the deck to serve as the discard pile.
Watch the First Card
That first card takes on an extra bit of significance in Oklahoma Gin. Instead of just serving as the first card in the discard pile, it also serves to tell the players how much deadwood they can have. For example, if you were to reveal a 5 card, then the maximum amount of deadwood any player can have in Oklahoma Gin is 5 (in standard gin the maximum is 10 as noted above).
Maximum of 10 Points of Deadwood
Face cards are counted as being 10 points regardless of which they are so that you’ll always have a maximum of 10 points of deadwood, however it is possible to have as little as two points of deadwood, which would be really hard to work with (in that case, the only way to get around the deadwood issue would be to do runs and add the deadwood to those runs).
Play Oklahoma Gin Here
As you can see, Oklahoma Gin is a potentially much more challenging game than standard gin rummy. However, that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the game. After all, a skilled Oklahoma Gin player could easily make some good money playing the game here at Rummy-Gin.Org.
